AGENDA-1: 2011 Folk Dance Performance Plans

Discussion

The group’s representative shared the performance plans for this year.

Decisions

The group is learning “Bitlis Halaylari” this year. During summer (May-August) there will be a break to Bitlis. The group will learn a new dance during this time and will continue to Bitlis from August till October 29.

Other performances for this year include:

-World Festival at ASU on March 1 st. The group will perform a combination of Zeybek and Trakya.

-April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

-Musical Instruments Museum cocktail on April 9.

-The group plans to visit a retirement home, perform and give a presentation about Turkiye. Baran will arrange the date.

-Festival at Thunderbird. Burcu will contact with the Turkish students at Thunderbird and learn more about the cultural festival.

-Scottsdale Festival-Haluk will give more details on the next meeting.

-Tucson Meet Yourself: October 7-9. Haluk will give more details later.

- Burcu will get in touch with the Turkish student clubs in Texas and learn more about the cultural festivals.

AGENDA-2: 3az-circle Draft Plans

t3az-circle coordinator presented several opportunities for fundraising

Decisions

First fundraising activity will be at the end of April and another one at the second half of the year. There will be a poll on our website for dates and different activities to choose from.

  • Save the family-Save the family empowers families to conquer homelessness and achieve life-long independence (weekday volunteering only)
  • Feed my starving children-Food packing in Tempe (might be weekend).
  • United food bank- Group volunteering in Mesa (sorting donated food, packing donated food, weekend is available for groups)
  • Fruit gleaning (citrus trees)

Fahir Atakoglu Concert

Including Phoenix to Fahir Atakoglu’s concert series and other fundraising activities.

Decisions

There are several options for the date. Venue will be decided once the date is set.

Dictionaries4Kids

A few teachers in the rural areas of Turkey have emailed BTF requesting for dictionaries. BTF collaborated with Redhouse and their aim is to deliver 5000 dictionaries in 2011. Each dictionary costs $3.

Decisions

TAA-AZ’s goal is to deliver 300 dictionaries (only $900). There will be a donation box for this project at the picnic on March 26 th.

AGENDA-3: Picnic Plans

Discussion

Spring Picnic’s date, time, menu and the activities were discussed.

Decisions

Date & Time: March 26, 2011, Saturday @ 1pm
Indian School Park Ramada 7 (4289 N. Hayden Rd. Scottsdale, AZ)


Menu: Sish Kebab, chicken kebab, kofte, salad, borek, rice (Turkish style), bread.
Must-have: Turkish dessert and unlimited Turkish tea.
Activities: volleyball tournament, backgammon tournament, ball games, painting contest for kids, Turkish dessert contest.

 

AGENDA-4: General Calendar Review

Discussion

April 23 rd

Presenting Turkiye at the targeted K-12 schools.

Decision

A Sunday Conversation about April 23 rd not only as the Children’s Festival but also as the National Sovereignty Day. Preparing a powerpoint presentation about Turkiye and make it available to our members who would like to present it at schools. These presentations may include where we are located on the map, fun facts, show our alphabet and how to say simple things in Turkish.

Inventory Stock

Bahar prepared the inventory stock list and shared it with the attendees. Donating the books to a library was discussed.

Decision

We have decided to sell the books at the TAA-AZ events to help raise money for Dictionaries4Kids.

  • Bengi-a music group (Ahmet and Irfan’s friends from ODTU)
  • ODTU THBT (Turk Halk Bilimi Toplulugu)
  • Connecting East Coast concerts with the West Coast.

  • Fundraising activity at a festival? (sell food, drinks)

  • Donation matching programs (stand at Intel volunteer)
